Strange But True Story

Strange But True Story

ItemTitle

My strange but true story starts twenty-five years ago, when I was sixteen. I had just hitched a ride back out to Interstate 90 as the sun was setting. The previous night I had been caught alone in the back country on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park, in a freak May blizzard. A grizzly bear pawed the ground outside my tent in the middle of the night, scaring me half to death. That, however, is another story.

Strange But True Story

Story Mountain

This strange-but-true-story starts with me standing on the side of the freeway ramp, with my thumb out. Even here in the valley near Livingston there was snow on the lilac flowers, and my tennis shoes were still wet from stumbling (lost) through the mountains earlier in the day. After an hour or two, a car finally pulled over, and this is how I met Violet.

Story Mountain

Strange But True Story

It was tough to determine her age, but from the stories she told, I guessed she was in her fifties. She was on her way home from her brother's trial in Bozeman. When I asked her what he was on trial for, she told me "He killed his girlfriend," and in case I doubted her, she flipped over the newspaper on the seat. There she was on the front page, with the headline, "Sister Says He Should Be Hanged."

Strange But True Story

"He just cut her up for no good reason," she explained. Not knowing what to say, I said nothing. Although she seemed perfectly comfortable talking about it, she graciously changed the subject.

"Having a hard time getting rides here?" she asked. I told her I had waited a while. "That's because a few years back a man was killed by a hitchhiker right on that highway down to Yellowstone," she explained. "They found the hitchhiker in the woods near the road, roasting the man's heart over a fire."

"I guess that explains why it's hard to get rides," I agreed.

Violet had only had trouble with a hitchhiker once, she told me. "He was even younger than you, and he pulled a knife on me and tried to rob me." When I asked her what she did, she replied casually, "Well, I just pulled out my gun on him and told him he better behave if he wanted a ride." That seemed fair, I agreed.

She told me about the last time she was camping in Yellowstone, back in the fifties, when her husband was still alive. They and others saw a missile come out of the sky and hit a mountain, triggering an earthquake. Army officials came and told everyone in the area that it was a matter of national security, and they couldn't say a word about it. I nodded and asked for a few more details.

Then there was the story about the UFO. An alien spacecraft had hovered over them during another camping trip, picking up their trailer in a "tractor beam" and lifting it off the hitch on the car, into the sky. It was dropped in a field nearby, and the sheriff, who was driving behind them at the moment, saw the whole thing.

Violet let me spend the night at her house, in her brothers room. In the morning, before driving me back out to the freeway, she even offered to let me take any of her brothers clothes or cowboy boots, since, "He won't be needing them anymore." I declined.

Later in the year, safely home in Michigan, I got a letter from Violet, wishing me a Merry Christmas. She had drawn a picture at the top of a dog in a spacesuit, which she labeled "Space Dog." In the meantime, I had discovered that there had been an earthquake in the Yellowstone area when she claimed they saw the missile, and it had been strong enough to form a new lake.

I still was assuming that the killer hitchhiker was at least an exaggeration. It wasn't. Years later I heard all the grizzly details in the news because they were letting the killer go free now that he was sane. Amidst the publicity, the authorities were having a hard time finding a town to place him in.

To this day, I still haven't read or heard anything about an alien spacecraft that picks up camping trailers, but I'm waiting. Who knows? Montana is full of strange but true stories.

On a cold December night a lone biker rode the highways, working his way home after a trip to Mexico. His saddlebags buldged with toys and trinkets he had bought for some orphans who lived at a group home near his home. The old biker had lived a good life, and as he rode that dark night, he thought about how blessed his life had been. He was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things of life. As he thought of all the good in his life, he was thankful to have a loving partner who understood his need to ride the highways and he was thankful for his bike that had never failed him. As the miles rolled by, he thought about the many road trips he had taken. As he rode, the miles slipped by and he was happy. As he entered the high desert about 40 miles from the border his life would forever be changed. As luck would have it, the lone biker came around a curve and was ambushed by the gremlins. As was their practice, they had scattered across the road an old pair of shoes, a board with a nail in it, pieces of tires and trash. And they had dug holes in the road for bikers to run over and, they hoped, crash.

Biker Bells: The Story Behind the Tradition

And every time a biker wrecked, the road gremlins rejoiced over the evil they had done. While the old biker fought to stay upright, the gremlins traps proved too strong and he crashed to the road, sliding to a stop next to his saddlebags that were broken open. Laying on the road, bruised but not broken, he watched the gremlins come out hiding. Slowly they moved towards him. Unarmed, the old biker saw a bell that had spilled from his saddlebags and thinking there was nothing else he could do, he began ringing it, hoping to scare the evil gremlins away. Not too far away, a couple of bikers had stopped for the night to make camp. While sitting around the fire, they heard a ringing bell. Curious, they investigated and found the wounded biker now surrounded by gremlins. They hurried to his side and frightened the gremlins away. Grateful for what the bikers had done, the old biker took two of his bells and tied them to his rescuers bikes as low to the ground as possible. Before he left them, he told the two bikers that should they ever need help to ring the biker bells that he had put on each of their bikes, and a fellow biker would come to their aid.

Apple Computer - Steve Jobs' Success Story

Steve Jobs was adopted to a family in Mountain View, California. While still in high school, Jobs interest in electronics prompted him to call William Hewlett of Hewlett-Packard to ask for some parts for a school project. Hewlett provided the parts and then made an offer to Jobs to intern at Hewlett-Packard for a summer. There, Jobs met Steve Wozniak, a talented and knowledgeable engineer five years older than the high school student. Their friendship would eventually be the foundation on which Apple was built.

Apple Computer - Steve Jobs' Success Story

Jobs dropped out of Reed College after one semester and went to work for Atari designing games. He carefully saved the money he earned while working at Atari so that he could take a trip to India and sate his bourgeoning interest in the spiritualism of the East.

After returning home from India, Jobs and Wozniak renewed their friendship. Jobs was shown a small computer that Wozniak had been working on as a hobby, but Jobs saw its potential immediately and persuaded Wozniak to go into business with him. In 1975, at the age of 20, Jobs went to work in his parents' garage with Wozniak working on the Apple I prototype.

The Apple I sold modestly, but well enough to be able to go to work on the Apple II. In 1977, the new model was put on sale. With a keyboard, colour monitors and user-friendly software, Apple became a success. The company made million in their first year and had surpassed 0 million in their third.

However, in addition to the Apple III and its successor the LISA not selling as well as had been hoped and a marked increase in competition in the sale of PCs, 1980 saw Apple lose almost half of its sales to IBM. Things got worse for Jobs in 1983 when a fight with the directors got him kicked off the board by the CEO, John Sculley, whom Jobs himself had hired.

In 1984, as a response to the sharp decline in sales, Jobs released the Apple Macintosh which introduced the world to the point-and-click simplicity of the mouse. The marketing for the Mac was handled poorly and with a price tag of ,500, it was not finding its way into the homes for which it had been designed. Jobs tried to repackage the Mac as a business computer, but without a hard-drive or networking capabilities, not to mention only a small capacity for memory, corporations were not interested. In 1985, without any power in his own company, Jobs sold his stock in Apple and resigned.

Later in 1985, Jobs began NeXT Computer Co. with the money he'd made from the sale of his stock in Apple. He planned to build a computer to change the way research was done. The NeXT computer, though complete with processing speeds previously unseen, unmatched graphics, and an optical disk drive, at ,950 each, sold poorly.

Persistent after the failures of the NeXT venture, Jobs began toying with software and started to focus his attention on a company he'd bought from George Lucas in 1986, Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs signed a three-picture deal with Disney, and began working on the first computer-animated feature. Released in the fall of 1995, it had taken "Toy Story" four years to be made. But the work had been well worth it, the film was an incredible success. Pixar went public in 1996, and in one day of trading, Jobs 80% share had become worth billion.

Apple was struggling, having failed to design a new Macintosh operating system, and the company only held 5% of the PC market. Days after Pixar went public, Apple bought NeXT for 0 million and renamed Jobs to the board of directors to advise Gilbert F. Amelio, the chairman and CEO. However, in March of 1997, Apple recorded a quarterly loss of 8 million, and Amelio resigned a few months later. Jobs was left in charge as interim CEO and it was up to him to keep the same company he had started and which had ousted him alive. So he made a deal with Microsoft. With an investment 0 million for a small stake in Apple, Apple and Microsoft would "cooperate on several sales and technology fronts", and Apple would be assured their continuation in the PC market.

Jobs also went to work improving the quality of the Apple computers. The introduction of the G3 Power PC microprocessor made the Apple faster than those computers operating on Pentium processors. Apple also turned its energies toward producing an inexpensive desktop, the iMac, that was another hit for the company. With Jobs once again in control, Apple was able to quickly turn itself around, and by the end of 1998, was bringing in .9 billion in sales. Jobs had returned to his first love, a little older and a little wiser. He had made Apple healthy again and returned it to a place where it was contributing new and innovative technologies to the computer world.

You may know the story of the Frog Prince: a handsome young prince was innocently minding his own business when, for no apparent reason, an evil witch cursed him and turned him into a particularly ugly little frog. He was doomed to live in this miserable, lowly condition until a princess with a pure, loving heart saw past his ugly exterior and kissed him. Her purity and sweetness would break the evil spell and turn him back into a handsome prince-and the perfect boyfriend for the lucky princess. That's how the story goes, right?

Story Mountain

Do You Know the Real Story of the Princess and the Frog?

Wrong.

Do You Know the Real Story of the Princess and the Frog?

Pick up Grimm's Fairy Tales and you'll read an entirely different version. The true story of the Frog Prince is better still.

You see, the witch in the story wasn't really evil at all. Her name was Ellspeth, and as she told it in her autobiography Ellspeth's Book of Shadows, Prince Heinrich wasn't as innocent as he later claimed. He refused to get out of her path as she walked up the mountain pass, searching for wild witch hazel. To add insult to injury, he called her all kinds of foul names. Ellspeth cursed the ill-tempered young prince for his own good, to teach him a lesson in manners.

When the princess (whose name was Anika) came along, tossing her famous golden ball in the air, and dropped her ball into the bog that Heinrich called home, Heinrich saw it as his golden opportunity to take advantage of Anika. He offered to retrieve her golden ball from the pond, if she'd let stay at the castle. His plan was mooch off Anika and her father the king, while all the while staying warm, moist and comfortable in the royal palace. Anika agreed, but she could only put up with Heinrich's selfish, greedy ways for so long. When he wanted her to allow his slimy carcass to sleep on her pillow, Anika got disgusted and threw Heinrich face-first into a stone wall. That would have killed an ordinary frog. But in Heinrich's case, it made him wake up and smell the bogwater. He realized he'd been an awful jerk, and turned back into a prince.

Anika, however, chose not to forgive Heinrich's thoughtlessness. She and the prince did not get married, and they certainly never lived happily ever after. In fact, after that incident, whenever Anika and Heinrich crossed paths, she was polite but distant to him. He accepted that he was never going to get anywhere with her romantically, though in his later years, he did become rather bitter about the lack of a closer relationship. He's said to have circulated rumors that the princess was born with webbed toes, which were later corrected through surgery. In fact, webbed toes ran in Heinrich's family, though he himself did not inherit the gene.

A fascinating variation on the fairy tale is "The Frog Princess" by Barbara G. Walker, from her book Feminist Fairy Tales. In it, a female frog aspires to marry a handsome and kind-hearted prince. She goes to a good fairy of the woods, who agrees to transform her into a human being if she can get the prince to kiss her. The clever frog succeeds, but her success comes at a terrible price. Although the prince and the frog both end of living happily, their happily-ever-after is spent apart. Female frogs, Walker notes in her introduction to the tale, are often larger and stronger than the males of their species. For that reason, the frog makes the perfect symbol of the independent woman who can make it in the world, even without her handsome prince.

Fly Fishing in High Mountain Lakes

Fly Fishing in High Mountain Lakes

ItemTitle

There are two types of high mountain lakes: those above the tree line and those below it. Some lakes are at such an elevation that they are above the level where trees can grow. These lakes usually sit at the bottom of a talus slope and offer very little cover for fish. Since these lakes are nutrient-poor compared to their lower neighbors, food is scarce and they tend to have fewer trout. This doesn't necessarily mean the fishing isn't good, though. As long as you don't spook the fish (which can be quite easy), you can take advantage of the scarce food situation. Hungry fish are eager fish. Because of the fierce competition for food, some of these high alpine trout will aggressively attack anything that even resembles a meal.

Presentations based on PowerPoint slides can be deadly, but presentations based on examples, real-life situations and stories can be inspiring and memorable. Most of us can remember dozens of stories from our childhood. A story like, The Tortoise and the Hare from Aesop is a great example. You can never underestimate the power of a good story. Storytellers captivate, motivate and inspire an audience. And great salespeople the world over know and use this power to engage with customers.

A Presentation Tip - Tell a Story

The Basic Story Formula

A Presentation Tip - Tell a Story

So how do you plan a presentation based on story and what are the elements of a great business story? It boils down to a simple formula: someone doing something against odds.

The someone can be a person, a company or even a product. The something is an action. And the odds, well, that could be a villain or obstacle or challenge. These are the basic elements of all good stories. Now, how do you put those elements to work?

A Story Needs a Hero or Heroine

A story needs a character we can relate to. Start with describing the main character or actor. This could be someone like Erik Weihenmayer an adventurer who climbed Mount Everest. The character could be a small company struggling to gain market share against a Fortune 500 giant, or a salesperson with a disability like Bill Porter who would not take no for an answer.

Describe a Challenge

One you have introduced your character; explain how this character struggled to achieve something or conquered obstacles against all odds. For mountain climber Erik Weihenmeyer, his challenge is that he is totally blind! He not only climbs mountains, but scuba dives and parachutes out of planes! For Bill Porter, cerebral palsy left him with impaired speech and a pain-wracked body. But that never stopped him for selling in a grueling door-to-door market. The movie of his life, Door to Door, shows how he overcame insurmountable odds to be one of the top salesmen in America.

The best characters and challenges are inspirational, and like Aesop, the audience can see a lesson in the characters as they struggle to succeed. You need to draw that conclusion for your audience: do not assume they will connect the dots on their own.

Relate Back to Your Audience

The most important part of your story is to make the challenges of the character relevant to your audience. Does your team face obstacles? What could they learn from the determination and resolve of your character? Is the economy a villain working against a small company? What strategy did that company put in place to overcome the economic downturn and succeed? Show your audience HOW they could do the same. Even better, what is your personal story of rising above the odds...your obstacles...your solution? Audiences love a personal story of triumph.

Practice Makes Perfect

Mastering the art of the story can propel your speaking to new heights, but you need to practice.  After all, it IS an art. Try storytelling on a regular basis in small meetings or staff events to gain feedback on your skills. Get comments on what works and does not. Listen to good storytellers and take mental notes. Keep a journal and fill it with all the great examples of stories that you hear everyday.

When you have the right story for the right audience, go for it! You will never go back to PowerPoint again!

Because lakes below the tree line offer more food, they typically house more fish. There is usually more cover for these fish to hide. The two drawbacks to these lakes are the abundant food (fish won't bite if they're not hungry) and the fact that they can be in heavily forested areas, which makes casting difficult. This can also shelter a lake from the sun.

Fly Fishing in High Mountain Lakes

I remember a hike I went on a few summers ago in Colorado. I tried to time my trip just as I thought the lake was thawing out in mid-June, since this time offers some of the best fishing of the year. During this time the fish are usually hungry and eager to bite anything that looks like food. I also think fish seem to forget some of their nervous habits over the long winter months and appear to be a bit less spooky just after the thaw. On this particular trip (as with many others), I had to use snowshoes to reach the lake only to discover that it was still iced over. I was probably two weeks early. Not wanting to give up, I took out my map to see if there were any other lakes in the area. Luckily, I spotted a small, unnamed lake on the map that rested just above the tree line. Although it was a little higher in elevation, it sat on a south-facing slope. I decided to give it a try since it received a bit more sun.

Fly Fishing in High Mountain Lakes

I reached the lake an hour later and I was in luck: the lake was just about ice free. I was sure I was the first fisherman to cast a line in that lake all year, but before I did, I hiked up a small hill overlooking the lake to scout the situation. I couldn't believe what I saw. It seemed every trout in the lake was cruising the shallows for food and probably enjoying the warmer water as well. They weren't schooled up (brook trout rarely are); instead it was as if each fish was out only for its own survival. To make the story short I got strikes on about every cast. This just shows that timing is as important as the many other ingredients of successful fly fishing.

Keep in mind the pros and cons of each type of high mountain lake and don't be afraid to hike a while to get to that elusive water hole that every fisherman claims to have found, though few probably actually have.
